FACT #1: Adoption is expensive. There is just no way to sugarcoat it. By the time everything is said and done, our final total will be inching up towards $30,000.00.
FACT #2: This IS happening
FACT #3: We’ve prepared for this*
The asterisk requires more detail.
We’ve been working towards this adoption financially for longer than we have been aware that we were actually going to adopt. Some years ago, we really felt the driving urge to ensure our finances were in order. That we were living humbly and within our means. That debt was paid off and we were establishing a savings. We’ve done a good job with this. And most people that know us can certainly attest to our lifestyle.
We have been blessed that Marta has always been a stay-at-home mom. Part of this was circumstantial and a part was a result of our family dynamics. We were very young parents and I joined the Army at the age of 19 – our son was about a year and half then. Marta working was just never conducive to our frequent moving around. In 2004, we had our daughter. So we made the stay-at-home mom thing work. We learned to live on a single income. We just got used to it.
You can read more on the how and why to our adoption story HERE. At the time of this writing, we are already about $6,200.00 into the process with a lot more to come. And, while Marta and I are fully ready to shoulder this expense, we definitely wanted to take the opportunity to call on our family, our friends, and our brothers and sisters in Christ to be a part of this journey. We feel so blessed to be in a position where we can open our hearts and home to a child that is in desperate need of a family. To feel the love growing in our hearts for a child whose face we have yet to see but is potentially alive on the other side of the world – we can’t even begin to describe how humbling and encouraging it feels to be in this position.
We want to invite you all to make an immeasurable difference in the life of a child who needs a family. To be part of a story that imitates what God has done for us in Christ. A story that reminds us that we are all adopted by our heavenly Father.
How to get involved
Here are some ways you can be involved – in our story, as a community, and as a blessing to us and this child:
1. Pray for us. First and foremost, pray without ceasing. For us to be covered in constant prayer has immeasurable worth. 1 John 5:14-15 reminds us, “And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.”
2. Donate and AdoptTogether with us. We signed up with a platform where you can contribute tax free donations to us through adopttogether.org. They are a non-profit, 501(c)(3) crowdfunding platform that bridges the gap between families who want to adopt and the children who need loving homes. In addition to the huge help that your contribution is, you get the added value of it being completely tax-deductible.
It is important to point out that this is NOT our personal piggy bank. The money we receive is based on actual adoption costs and the amount raised by our family. We are required to submit receipts for our actual expenses before they make their retroactive distribution to us – meaning, we pay first and then they reimburse the expenses through a grant. Read more about their process HERE.
2. Share our story. On Facebook, on Twitter, other social media, to your friends, in your small groups. We love the support and prayer.
Thank you so much for your love and support during this process! We are excited to be moving onward and look forward to sharing our continued story with you.
